School Psychologists: Essential Partners in Student Success
Dear Parents and Teachers,
First, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm a school psychologist. When some people say they're school psychologists, they get a variety of reactions. Some people don't know what we do. Some people think we just do evaluations to get students into special education services. And some people ask about the difference between us and counselors, teachers, or therapists.
So, I want to explain to you what a school psychologist is and why they're important.
A school psychologist is a highly trained professional in the fields of psychology, education, and behavior. We work with students, teachers, families, and administrators to improve the educational, emotional, and social outcomes for students. We do a lot of tasks, like:
•Evaluating students to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and their educational and psychological needs.
•Designing and implementing individual and group education plans and interventions to help students overcome challenges and reach their potential.
•Consulting with teachers, families, and administrators to provide guidance, support, and resources on how to promote a positive and supportive learning environment.
•Providing counseling and guidance to students who are facing emotional, behavioral, or social difficulties.
•Working to prevent and intervene in crises and problems such as bullying, violence, and suicide.
•Promoting social-emotional learning, positive school climate, and inclusive school culture.
•Facilitating communication and collaboration between families, schools, and communities to support students.
•Collecting and analyzing data to evaluate and improve the quality and effectiveness of school services and programs.
If you want a quick summary of our work, you can think of us as a mix between a teacher and a child psychologist. We use our expertise in psychology and education to help students succeed in school, at home, and in life.
Why are school psychologists in schools important? Because they meet the needs of students who may not get enough support anywhere else. Many students struggle with learning, attention, or mental health problems. These problems can impact their academic, behavioral, and social performance. And sometimes, they can prevent them from enjoying school and feeling connected to it.
School psychologists can help these students overcome those problems and achieve their goals. They can also help schools provide an educational environment that meets the needs of all students, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities. As a result, they can improve the quality of education, learning, and life for students and the communities they serve.
Unfortunately, there are not enough school psychologists to meet the growing demand for their services. In the United States, there is only one school psychologist for every 1,200 students or so. And in some places, this ratio reaches 1:5,000. This means that school psychologists are not able to provide all of the services they are capable of providing. This means that many students are not getting the support they need.
That's why we need to appreciate and value school psychologists. We also need to provide more resources, training, and support for school psychologists so that they can thrive in their work and increase their impact in schools.

يا جماعة الآباء والمعلمين،
أولاً، عايز أعرفكم بنفسي. أنا أخصائي نفسي مدرسي بعض الناس لما بيقولوا إنهم علماء نفس مدرسيين، بيحصلوا على ردود فعل مختلفة. فيه ناس ما يعرفوش إحنا بنعمل إيه. وفيه ناس فاكرين إننا بنعمل بس تقييم الطلاب عشان يحصلوا على خدمات التعليم الخاص. وفيه ناس بتسأل عن الفرق بيننا وبين المستشارين أو المعلمين أو المعالجين.
عشان كده، عايز أشرح لكم إيه هو الآخصائي النفسي في المدرسة وليه هو مهم.
الآخصائي النفسي في المدرسة مهني مدرب تدريبا عاليا في مجالات النفس والتعليم والسلوك. احنا بنشتغل مع الطلاب والمعلمين والأسر والإدارة عشان نحسن النتائج التعليمية والعاطفية والاجتماعية للطلاب. إحنا بنعمل كتير من المهام، زي:
- تقييم الطلاب لتحديد نقاط قوتهم وضعفهم واحتياجاتهم التعليمية والنفسية
- تصميم وتنفيذ خطط التعليم الفردي والجماعي والتدخلات عشان نساعد الطلاب على التغلب على التحديات والوصول إلى إمكاناتهم
- التشاور مع المعلمين والأسر والمسؤولين عشان نقدم النصح والدعم والموارد حول إزاي نعزز بيئة تعليمية إيجابية ومشجعة
- تقديم الاستشارات والمشورة للطلاب اللي بيواجهوا صعوبات عاطفية أو سلوكية أو اجتماعية
- العمل على منع والتدخل في الأزمات والمشاكل زي التنمر والعنف والانتحار
- تعزيز التعلم الاجتماعي العاطفي والمناخ المدرسي الإيجابي والثقافة المدرسية الشاملة
- تسهيل التواصل والتعاون بين الأسر والمدارس والمجتمعات عشان ندعم الطلاب
- جمع وتحليل البيانات عشان نقيم ونحسن جودة وفعالية الخدمات والبرامج المدرسية
لو عايزين ملخص سريع لعملنا، ممكن تفكروا فينا على إننا خليط بين معلم وأخصائي علم نفس الأطفال. احنا بنستخدم خبرتنا في علم النفس والتعليم عشان نساعد الطلاب على النجاح في المدرسة والمنزل والحياة.
ليه يعتبر الاخصائيين النفسيين في المدارس في المدارس مهمين؟ لأنهم بيلبيوا احتياجات الطلاب اللي ممكن ما يحصلوش على الدعم الكافي في أي مكان تاني. كتير من الطلاب بيعانوا من مشاكل في التعلم أو الانتباه أو الصحة العقلية. المشاكل دي بتأثر على أدائهم الأكاديمي والسلوكي والاجتماعي. وفي بعض الأحيان، بتمنعهم من الاستمتاع بالمدرسة والشعور بالانتماء إليها.
علماء النفس في المدارس ممكن يساعدوا هؤلاء الطلاب على التغلب على تلك المشاكل وتحقيق أهدافهم. كمان ممكن يساعدوا المدارس على توفير بيئة تعليمية تلبي احتياجات جميع الطلاب، بغض النظر عن خلفياتهم أو قدراتهم. وبالتالي، ممكن يحسنوا جودة التعليم والتعلم والحياة للطلاب والمجتمعات اللي بيخدموها.
للأسف، مافيش عدد كاف من علماء النفس في المدارس عشان يلبي الطلب المتزايد على خدماتهم. في الولايات المتحدة، فيه عالم نفس مدرسي واحد فقط لكل 1200 طالب تقريبا. وفي بعض الأماكن، تصل هذه النسبة إلى 1:5000. ده معناه إن الاخصائيين النفسيين في المدارس ما يقدروش يقدموا كل الخدمات اللي يقدروا يقدموها. ده معناه إن كتير من الطلاب ما بيحصلوش على الدعم اللي بيحتاجوه.
عشان كده، إحنا محتاجين نقدر ونقدر الآخصائي النفسي في المدارس. كمان محتاجين نوفر المزيد من الموارد والتدريب والدعم لعلماء النفس في المدارس عشان يقدروا يزدهروا في عملهم ويزودوا تأثيرهم في المدارس.
