Dear teacher,

Things a good teacher should do

·      Praise wherever possible& encourage.

·      Find something he is good at.

·      Give less homework(e.g., shorter essay, or underline main points)

·      Mark written work on content (not spelling)

·      Tick what is right instead of crossing what is wrong.

·      Mark on oral responses when possible.

·      Help student to pronounce words correctly.

·      Make sure he understood and remembered instructions.

·      Let him work with textbook open.

·      Put important words clearly on the board.

Teachers who are easy to learn from –what do they do?

·      At the start of the lesson, they are clear what you want us to do.

·      Show us as well as tell us.

·      Give us time to listen.

·      Use pictures and structural material – these make it easier to understand.

·      Show enthusiasm for the subject.

Teachers who are hard to learn from

·       Give too many instructions, too fast.

·       Don’t check if we understand.

·       Get angry when we don’t understand.

·       Don’t encourage /allow us to ask questions.

·       Rush us – tell us off if we don’t get enough done.

·       Don’t let us think for long enough before we have to start.

·       Shout-it makes it hard to think.

Never do these

·       Make a student read aloud in public if he is reluctant to do so.

·       Ridicule or employ sarcasm.

·       Correct all mistakes in written work-it’s too discouraging.

·       Make him change his writing.

·       Compare him with others.

·       Stop him from attending physical education classes or other classes he enjoys so that he can do other literacy.
